Have you ever found something so special that you’ve thought “I need to keep this forever!!!” My kids say that a lot, though they don’t really grasp the concept. I haven’t ever come across anything I want to keep forever. But I have certainly come across ‘someones’ that I want to keep! When I married Brad I said, I want to keep you! I want you to be mine forever! (Thankfully, he said the same!) My best friend and I throw around the idea that if our husbands die early we will live together. We want to keep each other. There are many friends I’ve wanted to keep. I have often been sad to say goodbye to people that I thought I would be close to forever….
Isn’t it amazing to think that God wants to keep us. And not only does He want to, but He does, and He is. “The Lord is your Keeper, He is the shade at your right hand. The Lord will preserve (keep) you from all evil, He will preserve (keep) your soul. The Lord will preserve (keep) your going out and coming in from now until forevermore.” Picture this verse – your Lord, standing beside you, so close that His shadow is your shade. He stands there keeping you, never leaving you – saying “She is mine.” (Add male pronouns if you are a man reading this.) Evil comes and grabs your arm and tries to pull you away – ‘can I just borrow her?’ asks evil. Jesus says, “No, let go, she is mine, I am keeping her. I’m not lending her to anyone, I’m keeping her. She is my very special treasure that I must keep and protect. I’m keeping her soul. Even death can’t take her away from me - I am keeping her soul with me for eternity.” Owned by God, stamped with His seal. What privilege, what protection. Never momentary, belonging forever. Freedom to rest, freedom to trust. He is the Keeper, He who keeps you will not slumber! “I the Lord, keep it, I water it every moment; lest any hurt it, I keep it night and day.” “You are mine.” Psalm 121:3-5, 7-8, Isaiah 27:3, Isaiah 43:1
