There was a reason God told Joshua not to be terrified. There were terrifying things afoot if you looked at the promised land through human eyes. 10 out of the 12 scouts did look through human eyes, and reported the land was occupied by giants who would devour them, and it was crazy to seek combat. It’s easy to be terrified if you focus on the giants. But we are called to live in the unseen, not the seen. And what can’t be readily seen is the mighty army of God. Joshua stepped out into enemy territory with complete faith in the unseen promises of God. Then something happened that we don’t always get, a momentary window in time where God made the unseen visable, and encouraged Him to continue. Joshua 5:13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Joshua continued to take over territory after territory of enemy occupied land for the rest of his life. What an amazing example of faith! We know David was similar in his faith eyes that dismissed the human reality in front of him. “You come at me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord God Almighty!” 1 Sam 17:45 Don’t fear the giants. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Cor 4:18
